Are Only Men Fit To Be Supreme Court Nominees?

The new rumour is that Karl Rove told James Dobson that the White House had decided to nominate a woman. (Aren't these guys Republicans?) This shorted the nominee list, and many of the other possible candidates took themselves out of the running - the main reason being the torture tests that the Senate puts nominees through. Certainly Harriet Miers is in for it, and from both sides since she is a perfect unknown. At least John Roberts has some experience, and he benefitted from Rehnquist's death (never mind how macabre that sounds) because Senate Democrats are perfectly willing to accept that Roberts will be no more conservative than he was - and would just absorb his vote. But Miers is unknown to conservatives and liberals - but the fact that Sen. Reid is on her side doesn't help her cause. Perhaps GWB chose her not for her conservative credentials, but because she was the one best able on that short list to make it through the Senate hearings with her sanity.
