When Did "The Daily Show" Become Real News?

After a late night out with friends yesterday, I came home and turned
on the telly to sober up before going to bed. The only interesting
thing on was "The Daily Show," where I expected to hear Jon Stewart
blather on about how GWB is a big dummy. Instead, I get actual news
from Lewis Black. In his "Back in Black" segment, he talks about some
of the idiotic things going on in New Orleans. One interesting tidbit
concerned the Carnival cruise ships housing Katrina victims and NOLA
police. Apparently the federal government, or FirstGov for you
historically challenged, is paying Carnival $250+ million for use of
the ships. This big number breaks down into $1240+ per person. That
is a lot by itself, but it is insane when you realize that normal
prices average just under $600/person. So Carnival gets to pocket
$600+/person, thanks to the American taxpayer and their idiot
government.

Doesn't this sound like the Onion? Put victims of hurricanes and
flooding on a boat and then overcharge?

Why do people still trust the government to do anything? FEMA has done
more damage to the relief effort by actually showing up in the Gulf
Coast than it ever did in the days no one could find them. Nagin's
government wasted a $500K federal grant that should have gone towards
creating a comprehensive evacuation plan; and his first order of
business after locking the poor in the Superdome was to disarm the
remaining populus who were defending themselves against the looters and
murderers that Nagin himself warned the nation about on TV.

"People need rescuing and assistence Mr. Mayor!"

"Screw them sargeant! Go get those guns!"

One of my friends who is in the Army now (not behind the plow, sorry)
used to argue whether or not the government is considered part of the
civil society. Aggressive gun control is the number one proof that
government is NOT part of the civil society, and shows that the
government truly does fear the civil society as a whole.
