More Snakes...

This is from a friend of mine - "I know this might cost me some hip points but I don't want to spent money on that movie. I am down for some food and drinks tonight, but not so much Snakes and Plane."

Yeah, hip status - lowered.

EDIT - This movie kicks snake nuts all over the place. I went in expecting it to be bad and overhyped - and well, I was shocked at how good it was. It doesn't have the complicated plot of Highlander, but I don't feel I am out of line calling it a cinematic tour de force.

I saw the film Friday at 8pm at the Atlantic Station multiplex, and man - it was an experience. People CHEERED when Samuel L. Jackson's name came across the screen, and they went wild when just the title Snakes On A Plane was on the screen. Just the title. White people complain about black people being loud during movies - well for this one, there wasn't a silent mouth of any race. People were drawn into the story and they went nuts over the gratuitous snake attacks. Even if you are afraid of snakes, watch this movie - else you just may become an outcast.

Plus, there are few movies that can have a name like Snakes On A Plane and still manage to get some good boob footage in the final cut. Hot chicks, character arcs, suspense, drama, action, adventure, comedy, tragedy - you like any of that stuff... then watch muthafuckin' Snakes on a muthafuckin' Plane.

EDIT2 - It looks like Snakes on a Plane is the #1 movie this weekend. Bringing in $15M this, it underperformed vs. last year's summer openers, but hey - it had a lot of skeptics. Snakes on a Blog has a whole slew of comments from viewers of the movie that pretty much mirror my own experiences. Also, SoaB has a listing of the major reviews so far:

The Boston Globe - 3.5 out of 4 stars
Chicago Sun Times - 2 out of 4 stars
The Toronto Star - 3 out of 4 stars
The New York Times - positive
The New York Post - 3 out of 4 stars
Washington Times - 2.5 out of 4 stars
Philadelphia Inquirer - negative
Boston Herald - C+
USA Today - 2.5 out of 4 stars
The AP - 3.5 out of 4 stars

Most notably, the New York Times calls mf Snakes a "United 93 without the tears." Not bad for a movie that was heavily influenced by the internet.
