Go See Borat
Maybe George Clooney was right, Hollywood is more higher minded than the rest of the country. After all - the higher ups in LA all thought that movies and shows that featured violence, gross crude humour, and making fun of Jews will fail commercially. Of course - Family Guy, South Park, and now Borat have proven just how sad the American populace is - or just that ordinary Americans have a good sense of humour.
I am not going to give much away - but when you have "shape-shifting" Jews, prostitutes, and Pamela Anderson in an ornate burlap sack - at somepoint in those 90 minutes you are going to laugh - hard.
The anti-Semitism is overt to hilarious parody, although the Emory kids felt really bad about laughing, and some of them after the show looked like they felt a burning sensation when they went to pee.
I figured this movie would do well when I went to buy my ticket at 6:30pm and both 8pm shows were sold out. The 7:30pm show was open because no one in their right mind would plan to be in Atlantic Station at that time - Friday traffic would guarantee that you would run late.

Box Office Mojo states that Borat made over $26,455,463 on its opening weekend, not including the other $17,750,000 it made in other countries for a total opening weekend of $44,205,463 total. That's not bad for this type of comedy. They've already pulled a profit off of a $18 million production budget. I'm not sure how much they've spent on advertising, but this movie is going to do quite well.
The best part is that they pulled this off only showing Borat on 800 screens. I wonder what the take could have been if they did a full release. Hell, it may explode this coming weekend with full release. Sexy time.
